The Food for Life report, which was published in 2003, was a collaboration between Food for Life, school cook Jeanette Orrey and Organix founder Lizzie Vann to expose the low standard of food across UK schools.
The National Food Strategy recommended that all schools adopt the ‘whole school approach’, as well as use the model of Food for Life Served Here catering certification to introduce a national catering accreditation scheme.
Food for Life has worked with over 7,500 schools and early years settings since 2003, both through local authority partnerships and one-to-one. These pupils have been enjoying food that’s good for them and the planet, visiting local farms to find out where food comes from, and growing their own produce from the school garden.
A Food for Life spokesperson commented: “No matter the external environment, Food for Life knows that everyone should have access to healthy and sustainable food that is good for the climate, nature, and health. Children deserve equal access to good food and food education to build healthy habits for life, and the food environment should make it easy for everyone to eat healthy and sustainable food.
“Working within such a complex food system, all those who have been involved with or supported Food for Life in the last 20 years, whether that’s as an employee, a caterer, a parent, a pupil, a community organiser, are crucial to making these changes from the ground up.”
