Abstract
The UK fish and chip industry has bitten back to recent headlines “positioning the meal alongside unhealthy choices.”

Claiming it “welcomes any initiatives that are in the best interest of public health,” industry partners and organisations are calling attention to the work it has done to “encourage consumers to make healthier choices when it comes to fish and chips” – particularly around portion sizes and the frequency its eaten.

Having recently launched a ‘Fish and Chips Lite’ campaign, it hopes to drive “awareness of portion choice and healthy substitutes, and encourage consumers to ask fish and chip shops about portion sizes.”

The campaign - supported by businesses nationwide - follows “in-depth” research into the nutritional composition and portion control of fish and chips, which showed a “huge disparity” in portion sizes between shops across the country. Key industry figures are pushing shops to expand their range of portion choices and to continue to operate responsibly.

In a joint statement, the Frozen at Sea Fillet Association (FASFA), National Edible Oils Distributors’s Association (NEODA) and the National Federation of Fish Fryers (NFFF) said they “wholeheartedly agree that fish and chips can be enjoyed as part of a healthy and balanced diet.”

They added: “We will continue to work with commercial and industry partners as we raise awareness around the three benefits of portion choice: better health, commercial viability for both the consumer and fish and chip shop owners and a reduced impact on the environment.”
