First Tower Hamlets awards for healthier restaurants, cafes and takeaways

Abstract
The first-ever Tower Hamlets Food for Health Awards were presented on Friday recognising the efforts of contract caterers and restaurants to reduce levels of fat and sugar in their dishes.
The scheme, which is part of Tower Hamlets Healthy Borough Programme, has three levels of award - gold, silver and bronze – which will indicate to customers that by buying from one of these businesses they will be able to make a healthier choice. The first winners received their Food for Health Award certificates and commemorative plates to display in their premises. They are: GOLD: BaxterStoreyBaxterStorey at Barclays, 1 Churchill Place, London E14 5HP etc.venues, Dexter House, 2 Royal Mint Court, London EC3N 4QN Mudchute Kitchen, Mudchute Park and Farm, Pier Street, London, E14 3HP Restaurant Associates, Clifford Chance, 10 Upper Bank Street, London, E14 5JJ SILVER: Sweet and Spicy, 40 Brick Lane, London E1 6RF Gardiners, 630 Mile End Road, London E3 4PH Bar.B.Q. Base, 106 Mile End Road, London E1 4UN Dr Ian Basnett, joint director of public health said: "Tower Hamlets Food for Health Awards scheme is another big step forward in our Healthy Borough Programme. We are making it easier for local people to maintain a healthy weight throughout their lives, and to reduce their risk of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer." Tower Hamlets is one of nine Government designated 'Healthy Towns' to receive new funding until March 2011 to pilot environmental approaches making it easier for children and families to be more physically active and to eat more healthily.
