30th May 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Winner Serena Jayne Moriarty, aged 14 from Worthing in West Sussex, wowed the judges in this year's CookIt! – Guild of Food Writers cooking competition.
Serena's task was to cook a two-course meal in 90 minutes in the finals of the competition. The youngster impressed judges Xanthe Clay (Sunday Telegraph) and Stuart Gillies (executive chef at Boxwood Café in London), with a Fillet of Pollock with Herb Butter wrapped in Bacon and Squidgy Chocolate and Raspberry Puddings with Chocolate Tuiles. The winning prize was a weekend in London spending a morning in the kitchens of Giorgio Locatelli. In second place came Nicola Logan, aged 13, from the Isle of Man, who prepared a Sea Bream with Thai Green Tapenade and French Toast with Caramelised Apples. And two special prizes for Dish of the Day went to Siani Higginson, aged 13, and Ashton Fernihough, aged 10. Judge and food editor of BBC Good Food magazine, Jane Hornby, was delighted with the creativity of the menus and will be featuring some of them in the September issue. In total, seven children between the ages of 10 and 14 battled it out in the competition. The competition took place on 22 May in the BBC Good Food Kitchens.
