Abstract
Pupils at more than 70 schools across the East Riding, Yorkshire, will be tucking into a special St George's Day themed lunch today (23 April).
Each school will receive a selection of posters with some schools also displaying cardboard kings and queens and inflatable dragons in their dining areas.
On the menu is a traditional dinner of roast chicken and stuffing, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots. For dessert is St George's cake with chocolate fudge topping.
Themed days are classed as a treat rather than the norm and do not have to comply with the food based and nutrient based standards.
Catering manager Helen Sheehy said: "The strict nutrient standards we have to follow have impacted on the popularity of school meals. Our cooks are passionate about what they do and they provide a good service. We want to create more positive public awareness."
