Abstract
Wren's Nest Primary School in Dudley has won £5k in the School Food Trust's School of the Month competition in recognition for the effective ways they promoted healthy eating and transformed their school's meal service to encourage more pupils to eat a nutritious lunch everyday.
They've worked hard to ensure their meal service is an enjoyable as possible for all pupils and gathered feedback from pupils about what changes they should make including purchasing a new salad bar and a jacket potato machine. To ensure the children enjoyed a sociable and relaxing lunch experience round tables were bought to help the children talk easily with their friends and they introduced the finishing touches of fresh flowers and serviettes on all tables. The uptake of school meals by children at Wren's Nest is now higher than any other school in Dudley and Wren's Nest have also recently celebrated receiving the Platinum Healthy School award. Ruth Wylie, head teacher at Wren's Nest said: "We were thrilled to win the School Food Trust 'school of the month' award. The award recognises the hard work and energy that all the staff and children have given to developing our lunchtimes. We are proud of our dining room, school dinners and the whole lunchtime experience at Wren's Nest. We would be delighted to invite anyone to come and join us for lunch to celebrate our award." Prue Leith, Chair of the School Food Trust, said: ''Huge congratulations to Wren's Nest Primary School. To be selected as our School of the Month is no mean achievement and I know that behind the result is a terrific lot of hard and dedicated work. I hope everyone is delighted with themselves. They deserve to be.'' The School of the Month competition is a new initiative set up by the School Food Trust to recognise excellence and innovation in the area of school food. It allows all the schools that are signed up to the School Food Trust's Million Meals campaign the chance to win £5,000 every month. The competition is part of the School Food Trust's Million Meals campaign, which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of children by getting a million more students eating school meals by 2010. Over 5,000 schools across the country have already signed up to the campaign.
