Abstract
Dorset County Council is launching a Nutritional Care Strategy for Adults, which aims to help combat malnutrition and dehydration.

Details will be unveiled at a Nutritional Care Conference it is organising to be held at Dorford Centre in Dorchester on May 13th. Council chief executive Debbie Ward said local authority and NHS care staff, caterers, GPs, dietitians and care home staff and volunteers were invited to attend to find out more about the initiative.

She said: “Malnutrition affects three million people living in the community; approximately one in three of people admitted to hospitals and care homes. This costs £13bn a year.

“In 2012 a National Malnutrition Task Force was brought together to ensure the prevention and treatment of malnutrition was embedded in all care and community support services and awareness was raised among older people and their families.

“Dorset's work has been seen by them as an excellent example of how to achieve this aim, and make it count locally. The Nutritional Care Strategy for Adults will affect us all, so come along and find out what you can do to support it.”

Topics to be covered on the day include the Dorset care strategy, a Malnutrition Task Force update, dignity and nutritional care, dementia and good hydration.

Among the speakers are Janine Roberts, programme director of the Malnutrition Task Force, Martin Green, chief executive of the English Community Care Association, and Rekha Elaswarapu, dignity adviser with Helping Hands Home Care and a member of the Cross Parliamentary Forum on Hydration/Dignity.
