Abstract
Anya Murray and her ‘Dinner Ladies’ team have beaten nine other finalists to be crowned the winner of UKTV’s Local Food Hero 2009.
Over two years ago, Anya won the contract to cater lunches to the school she had been working in, after being less than thrilled about what the kids were eating. She found that local businesses which were able to supply the new venture was the simple solution to providing healthy, tasty homemade meals for the kids. Anya wanted to make free range and organic products go from farm to fork, so children could taste food at its best, helping them to get excited about what they eat, and get excited about local produce. Their suppliers have benefitted in increased sales too, as children often ask their parents to buy products featured in their lunches, so they can enjoy them at home. The Dinner Ladies were overjoyed to win the competition, and have not only scooped the prestigious title, but a stunning trophy and £5000 to invest in their business. Celebrity chef, Brian Turner CBE, who's been involved with the competition said: "The Dinner Ladies' win is thoroughly deserved and I am glad that already other schools are talking to you. This, in my mind, is the kind of scheme that should be set up nationwide to protect the future of our youngsters. Keep it up!"
