Contract caterer bartlett mitchell cuts its carbon emissions

6th May 2011 - 00:00
Abstract
Independent contract caterer bartlett mitchell has reduced the number of deliveries it receives each Wednesday by almost half since launching its 'wheel-free Wednesdays' initiative – part of its sustainability programme.
Launched in conjunction with foodservice wholesaler 3663 just five months ago, bartlett mitchell has reduced the number of deliveries it receives each Wednesday by 46% simply by changing its delivery schedules. Andy Kemp, group sales director at 3663, said: "We're thrilled to have partnered with bartlett mitchell on this successful industry-first campaign. In just five months, we've seen many of the units take up the scheme – putting bartlett mitchell on the right track to meet their target to decrease carbon emissions by 25 per cent over the next 12 months. "The initiative has also had a positive cultural effect on bartlett mitchell's team, who were encouraged to reduce vehicle usage on Wednesdays in favour of walking, cycling or public transport. All in all, the campaign to date has been a success and we look forward to seeing it grow throughout the industry." David James, creative director of bartlett mitchell, added: "I was delighted by the enthusiasm with which 3663 took up this project. Their sustainability credentials are among the best in the industry and 3663 structures its business to benefit its local communities, products, environment and its people. "The team not only created a logo to brand our campaign, but also helped us to communicate these changes to our area managers and our customers. We were keen to make the most of 3663's knowledge to establish our sustainable programme and we're pleased to say it's having a very positive impact on the way that we work."
