Compass Group redesigns three more food kiosks at Edinburgh Zoo

26th Jun 2012 - 00:00
Abstract
Compass Group UK & Ireland’s Leisure team - which operates the catering outlets at Edinburgh Zoo - has, in partnership with 442 Design, redesigned three more of the venue’s food kiosks.
Compass won the contract at Edinburgh Zoo – worth £2.6 million per annum – in April 2011. These new offerings form part of the second phase of a major programme of investment in catering outlets at the Zoo and follow the creation of the Grasslands Restaurant and Jungle Food Court. The development of the three latest eateries will mean visitors can now tuck into treats from The Gourmet Popcorn kiosk and Sweetie Shop and make the most of the summer sunshine with the Big Griller BBQ, a new outdoor BBQ space. Commenting on these new offerings Roy Westwood, head of innovation for sport, leisure and hospitality, Compass Group UK & Ireland, said: "Together with 442 Design, we have created another three innovative food and drink units, including what we believe to be the first Gourmet Popcorn kiosk at an outdoor visitor attraction. This will offer a range of four popcorns; salt, sweet, toffee and a range of guest flavours like wasabi. "In addition to the Gibbon Gourmet Popcorn Kiosk we are also introducing the new Big Griller BBQ and the Sweetie Shop, named after Tian Tian ('Sweetie'), the female giant panda. All three outlets are now open and we have introduced elements of humour and fun at each one to help create a more memorable environment as part of the visitor experience." David Shepherd, head of commercial for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, added: "As one of Scotland's premier visitor attractions, we are always looking at ways to enhance the experience we offer customers and our food and drink outlets play a key part of this. The new restaurant and food court have proved hugely popular and we're sure these latest additions will also be a great hit this summer."
