Abstract
Compass’ coffee making champion Laska Goldsack has made it through to the global final of the Costa Coffee Barista of the Year competition.

Goldsack, a supervisor at the Compass run Costa store at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, booked her spot in the final by being crowned the best barista from Costa’s 330 UK corporate franchise partner run stores.

Laska’s specialty coffee is called 'ristretto salato' and consists of a single ristretto – a very short shot of espresso, a coffee and almond cream and a drizzle of salted caramel.

Goldsack commented: “I am so excited, I’m still in shock. It’s an honour to win but now I am really nervous about the finals. It will be interesting to see what other baristas have created for their speciality drink and compete on an international level.”

Andy Porter, hot beverage business director at Compass, said: “Laska is a fantastic barista who makes a perfect coffee with speed and precision, time and time again. Every barista is different and each brings their own flair and creativity to every cup. Just the ingredients needed for a great competition. Congratulations to Laska and good luck for the final!”

Marco Cremonini from Costa added: “Our annual Barista of the Year competition recognises the passion, skill and pride of Costa baristas from around the world who compete for the honour of being crowned global champion. The skill and expertise of the barista is integral to the success and quality of Costa coffee and our judges look for a barista who can deliver an unbeatable coffee experience.”

Taking place in London on October 23, the global final will see 12 finalists from as far afield as China, India, Dubai, Poland and the UK compete head to head. The final winner will receive a trip for two to a coffee growing region, including spending money and the all important Barista of the Year Trophy for 2012.
