In 2012, Coca-Cola committed to reducing the average calories per litre in its range of sparkling drinks by the end of 2014. This commitment led to a total reduction in calories per litre of 5.3%.
To achieve this, the company invested £15 million in reformulation and new product development in the last three years and launched Coca-Cola Life, which has a third less sugar than regular Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola also signed up to the Department of Health’s voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme. Labels will appear on drinks this year. In the coming years, Coca-Cola aims to reduce calories per litre by a further 5% and by the end of 2020, it hopes Great Britain will be the first country in the world where 50% of the cola it sells will be lower or no calorie.
