Abstract
Coca Cola has suggested it will not take legal action against the UK government over its proposed sugar tax, and is instead looking to collaborate in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.
Speaking to the Financial Times, the company’s chairman of Coca-Cola European Partners said it was preparing to produce more low-sugar alternatives, such as waters and teas.
Sol Daurella, chairman of CCEP, told the FT: “I can’t imagine we will fall into legal issues with the government. We want to collaborate in taking actions that are effective in reducing obesity.”
The sugar tax, which is expected to come into force in 2018 and generate around £520m a year, is estimated to hit around half of Coca-Cola’s portfolio.
