Abstract
C&K Meats is recalling both its country style pork sausages and its sage and caramelised red onion pork sausages because they contain sulphur dioxide, which is not mentioned on the label, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The products, sold exclusively at Asda, are a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.

For both sausage varieties, products with ‘use by’ dates up to and including 23 March are affected. No other C&K meats or Asda products are known to be affected.

The FSA says: “If you have bought either of the above products and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites, do not eat them. Instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”

The FSA also notes that Ultralife is recalling five varieties of its food supplement products because they contain wheat (gluten), milk, nuts, eggs and soya that are not declared on the label. Different Ultralife products contain varying allergens. The supplement supplier’s detox total cleansing and detoxifying drink, performance protein, performance lean gain, slim shake and its fitness shake healthy meal replacement are all affected.

The ‘Food allergen labelling and information requirements under the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation No. 1169/2011’ guidance applies to all countries in the UK. It relates to products or ingredients that have had sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites intentionally added in the preparation of the food, or that have been added to an ingredient used in a preparation of the food, when present above 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre in the finished product as consumed. The method of analysis for sulphur dioxide/sulphites cannot differentiate between those naturally present in the food or added as a preservative.

The guidance also states that terms such as ‘soya’ or ‘soy’ are sufficient to indicate the soybean origin. Foods deriving from soybean, such as tofu or edamame, must be marked, e.g. ‘tofu (soya)’ or ‘edamame (soya),’ unless exempt.
