The three-year funding will support a refrigerated van which delivers 67,000 meals a month to people in need across the capital. According to research, one in four Londoners are facing food poverty.
Sarah Calcutt, City Harvest chief executive, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Wimbledon Foundation for generously supporting one of our vans. This enables us to deliver an additional £1.5m worth of food to people facing hunger and disadvantage in London.”
The Roehampton Community Box is an example of a local charity that City Harvest’s supports with free food. During the school holidays, families supported by the project struggle to put meals on the table as expenses go up.
A volunteer at the Roehampton Community Box added: “City Harvest is the reason we can expand our service to another day. We used to open just one day a week, but now we can get food to an extra 60 families. It makes such a difference.”
