The tool was unveiled at a launch event at London’s City Hall last week, which was attended by 180 people and saw variety of industry figures air their views on issues surrounding food proverty and surplus food redistribution.
Speakers included Plan Zheroe’s founder Lotti Henley; Sustain’s senior project officer on the FoodSave project, Charlotte Jarman; Bob Gordon, Do the Right Thing Manager at restaurant chain Nando’s; Jesse Scharf from the National Union of Students; and Paolo Sparapassi, former UK training manager of food chain Paul.
The tool, which took 18 months to research and develop by technology specialists Keytree, enables a business which has surplus food to donate to alert nearby charities to receive their available food. The charities who claim the food can then link with local volunteers and transporters to continue the surplus food’s journey.
