He tweeted: “If Glastonbury can get rid of plastic bottles then why not Wimbledon? Time for tennis to embrace refill!”
Wimbledon has over 100 free water refill points and fountains for people to use. The Wimbledon app provides visitors with the closest refill points but plastic drink bottles were still sold frustrating the anti-plastic campaigner.
This year, Wimbledon changed their plastic recycling scheme after fans highlighted the amount of waste generated. The tennis championship will serve Evian water bottlers that are made from 100% recycled plastic. Evian is attempting to achieve this on every bottle sold worldwide by 2025.
Wimbledon has also banned plastic bags for players’ rackets meaning 4,500 fewer plastic bags will be used at this year’s tournament.
The All England Club has hired ten ‘eco champions’ to help visitors put waste in the correct location. Richard Lewis, Wimbledon’s chief executive, was the reported as saying: “People really want to do the right thing but they have to have the knowledge and the confidence to do the right thing.
“That is why we will have people around helping inform the public when they are looking to dispose their waste.”
