Celebrate National Burger day
Abstract
Whether you have a beef, chicken or veggie burger, it cannot be denied that burgers are one of the nation’s favourite food - so enjoy celebrating National Burger Day, today (23 August).

Mr Hyde, a website that sends emails to ‘deliver key bulletins on style, food and drink, tech, going out and culture,’ invented the day six years ago to celebrate the beloved patty and teamed up with a number of burger restaurants to offer a 20% discount.

Catering company Sodexo are even joining in the celebrations by offering its customers the choice of two burgers, the traditional cheeseburger, with an option of bacon, and a meat-free option mushroom burger.

There are multiple claims to its invention, but the humble burger appears to have had its beginnings around the turn of the 19th century and their popularity went on a roll at the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis in the USA.

Since the 1900s, the burger market has beefed up; in 2016 Mintel estimated that the burger market was worth nearly £3.3 million and it now encompasses more than just a slab of meat inside a hastily sliced bun.

From the classic McDonalds cheeseburger, to a carefully crafted Hawksmoor gourmet burger in London, here are just a few of the trends that have kept burger-lovers going back for more:

Gourmet burgers: They have been set apart from the rest, and are often centre stage wherever eaten. With high-quality meat and toppings, balanced flavours and Instagram-worthy looks, the gourmet option has become a fast favourite for customers and caterers across the country.

Slider burgers: Taken from across the pond, Slider burgers are a traditionally a smaller version of a classic hamburger, typically only two inches across, however they have proven to be a success at events and parties and many have given them their own twists.

Plant based: As more and more people cut down on their meat intake, the plant-based option will steam ahead. With its astounding success in the US, Beyond Meat is launching a plant-based burger in the UK which looks and tastes like meat and will be sold in Tesco. It will certainly be the burger trend to watch for the next year.
