Abstract
Catering student Wendy Tunnicliffe has overcome literacy problems to scoop two achievement awards in one year.
Having won an Adult Learner of the Year award back in May, Wendy was recently named as Catering City Achiever 2010 at City College Brighton and Hove's annual award ceremony to celebrate outstanding student achievement. Until two years ago, Wendy couldn't read but when she attended a computer class at the Bridge Community Education Centre in Brighton, a friend offered to help her to learn to read. Having made outstanding progress, Wendy joined City College on a Level 2 NVQ professional cookery programme where she has become a high-achieving student. Wendy now teaches young students, single parents and the elderly to cook healthily on a limited budget at the Bridge Centre. Wendy said: "I'm very open about the fact that I've just learnt to read and this award really makes me feel like I've actually achieved something special. My tutor Allan Paul is so happy for me and my family are so proud that it feels like I've won it for them too. I couldn't have done it without City College. I've had so much support and whatever problems I've had, the College has helped to solve them." City College Principal Phil Frier added: "Wendy recently appeared on BBC local radio and the station was inundated with calls about how inspiring her story was. She sums up the importance of lifelong learning and everyone at the College is so proud of what she's achieved." During the awards evening, from a cohort of around 12,000 students, the College chose forty-one winners in areas as diverse as Visual Arts, Business, Hairdressing, Horticulture, Carpentry, Sports and Catering.
