Abstract
Four in ten catering professionals (44.4%) admit they are on the brink of burnout, with 60% stating work is the main contributor, according to new research from CV Library.

CV Library surveyed 2,000 UK professionals and found that work stress resulted in 48.1% of catering professionals feeling exhausted, 37% having trouble sleeping and 29.6% suffering from negative thoughts.

Yesterday was Blue Monday (20 January) and it is considered to be the saddest day of the year due to failing New Years resolutions and post-festive finances being at their worst.

Lee Biggins, founder and chief executive of CV Library, said: While some professionals thrive on keeping busy, it shouldn’t get to a point where they’re taking work home with them, struggling to sleep or constantly feeling exhausted; and as an employer, you have a duty of care towards your team.

“Be sure to create an open channel of communication so employees know they can come to you with any concerns they may have about their workload. Nowadays, addressing mental health and prioritising the wellbeing of employees is crucial for organisations; particularly when it comes to attracting, recruiting and retaining the best workers.

When asked about what causes anxiety at work, respondents said:

  • Excessively high workload: 42.3%
  • Pressure from their manager: 34.6%
  • Demanding colleagues: 34.6%
  • Having to work long hours: 19.2%
  • Meeting unrealistic targets: 19.2%
