Catering firm Meal Machine closed down

22nd Jul 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
Birmingham-based catering company, Meal Machine, has been shut down after an outbreak of food poisoning affected more than 40 police officers.
Various media reports suggest that officers policing a demonstration in the city centre fell ill experiencing sickness, diarrhoea and dehydration. A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said: "The premises were closed under the Food Hygiene in England Regulations 2006. Conditions at the premises were unacceptable. "The firm has been given schedule of work, and will remain shut until this has been completed. It was shut on Thursday 9th July." Reports on local newspaper website Birmingham Mail indicate that officers ate from supplied packed lunches containing chicken and stuffing sandwiches. Nine officers were treated by paramedics and three were taken to hospital. A spokesperson from West Midlands Police has said the incident is one for the council's environmental health officers.
