Caterers serve up Christmas lunch at Shropshire schools

7th Dec 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
Shropshire's school children are now tucking into Christmas lunch during the festive season.
The Christmas menu will be served at primary schools until the end of term, with each individual school choosing the day on which it will be served. Treats on the menu include traditional West Midlands roast turkey, chipolatas, stuffing balls and gravy, served with roast and creamed potatoes, carrots, peas and sprouts. A vegetarian option of a 'yuletide layer' – cheese omelette layered with sweet potato, parsnip and cranberry – is also available. Puddings on offer include Christmas pudding with custard, chocolate log and Christmas Tree cookies. A main course and dessert costs £1.80. Area manager Ann Hirst said: "This has been a fantastic year for the service which is now ranked amongst the best in the country. This wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of our cooks and support from parents and children, which we hope will continue for years to come." Councillor Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council lead cabinet member for children and young people's services, added: "There is always a wonderful atmosphere in our school dining halls at this time of year, and I hope lots of pupils take up the option of Christmas lunch. "School meals in Shropshire are of a very high quality, and the service has won awards for the high standard of meals served in our schools. Eating school meals is a great way to eat healthily every day at a very reasonable price."
