Originally started by Harbour Lights Restaurant in Falmouth, Cornwall, IMPD has returned to celebrate a food item also known as ‘Yorkshire caviar’. In fact, mushy peas are regular ones that have been grown for an extra two weeks.
A spokesman for the restaurant said that the proper etiquette for eating peas is to 'squish them on the back of your fork and chomp away'.
He added that they are full of protein and include essential minerals including iron, zinc, potassium plus they are rich in fibre and vitamins and low in calories.
The arrival of International Mushy Pea Day also fits with the Food Foundation’s initiative ‘Peas Please’, which is encouraging people to increase their consumption of of vegetables.
The Food Foundation says it wants to secure commitments from industry and government to improve the availability, acceptability (including convenience), affordability, and quality of the vegetable offer in shops, schools, fast food restaurants and beyond.
