Abstract
Contract caterer Elior UK teamed up with the Marine Conservation Society to clean Sand Bay beach (Weston-Super-Mare) this summer – collecting over 450 pieces of litter from just a 100m stretch.

Highlighting the damage single-use plastic has on the ocean and its wildlife, the duo revealed that 76% of the rubbish they collected was made of plastic.

Charlotte Wright, Elior UK corporate social responsibility manager, commented: “Clearing just one beach of so much plastic is a stark reminder of the consequences that single-use plastics have on the environment.

“That’s why Elior has laid out a three-year plan to achieve a sharp reduction in the volume of single-use plastics in our supply chain and operations.”

The partnership follows the company’s decision to ban single-use plastic straws and stirrers (from 31 July and 30 September respectively) across its entire operation as part of its new ‘Plastics Policy.’
