Cashless meal payments for Derbyshire pupils

4th Aug 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Derbyshire County Council is providing over £180,000 towards introducing cashless payment systems at 10 more secondary schools over the next three years as part of its drive to improve school meals for students.
This new system means that pupils will pay for their meals using hi-tech fingerprint reader linked to a computer rather than with cash. No record of the fingerprint is stored as the scan 'reads' the individual print and translates 'marker' features into a series of numbers. These numbers make it impossible for the fingerprint to be reproduced. Parents who choose to sign their children up to the cashless system top up their child's meal account by posting a cheque to the school or pupils can add money at an on-site pay station. The system allows parents to set a daily spend limit. Benefits of the system includes a quicker and easier service by removing all cash transactions, reduce bullying because pupils do not need to carry cash, easier monitoring of nutritional information by schools, and pupils can earn points from buying certain healthy foods. Schools set to benefit are Aldercar Community Language College, Langley Mill, Bennerley School, Iikeston, Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield, Glossopdale Community College, Glossop, Granville Community School, Swadlincote, Highfields, Matlock, Iikeston School, John Flamsteed Community School, Denby, St Philip Howard Catholic School, Glossop, and St Thomas More Catholic School, Buxton. Schools already using the initiative including Anthony Gell School, Wirksworth, William Allitt School, Swadlincote, and Swanwick Hall School, Swanwick will have their systems updated.
