Cadbury Dairy Milk to donate 20% of profits in Fairtrade Fortnight initiative

1st Feb 2011 - 00:00
Abstract
Cadbury Dairy Milk has announced that 20% of profits from products sold during this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight (28th – February – 13th March) will go towards funding solar power projects in Ghanaian cocoa producing communities.
In working with Ghanaian farming communities, Cadbury has come to understand the transformational impact an affordable supply of electricity can have, empowering communities and helping to: • Run health clinics, keeping medicines cool and surgeries well lit • Improve education by allowing kids to study after school and achieve better grades • Alleviate poverty and health issues, as families no longer have to rely on traditional fuels such as kerosene to light their houses, which can be expensive and cause health issues • Bring people together by creating well-lit areas for community meetings People in the UK can participate in the campaign by buying certified Cadbury Fairtrade products which include Cadbury Dairy Milk, Buttons and Cadbury Drinking Chocolate. They can also learn more about the initiative, track its progress and take part in activities on the Cadbury Dairy Milk blog and Facebook page. Julie Reynolds, head of marketing for Cadbury Dairy Milk said: "We were really keen to support Fairtrade Fortnight for a second year by doing something extra to empower the Ghanaian communities that produce the cocoa we use in our chocolate and hot chocolate. "Through chatting and working with Ghanaian farmers, we know that helping them to invest in affordable electricity is hugely impactful to their everyday working and personal lives. This is what inspired us to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 by donating 20% of our profits to funding solar panels.''
