Abstract
PureGym, the UK-wide fitness club chain, has researched which European countries consume the highest amounts of soft drinks.

The study looked at 26 countries in the EU to assess which nation gulps down the most fizz.

The findings revealed that Brits consume 322 cans per person a year, the equivalent of just over two litres a week. This places the UK in number seven on the chart.

Germany took the top spot with the average person consuming 423 cans annually; while Greece came out best (no. 26) with locals drinking less than 50 litres a year.

Despite this, there is still no sugar tax in place in Germany or plans to make one in the immediate future.

The only country in the top five to have introduced a sugar tax is Belgium. Other countries such as Denmark, Czech Republic and Bulgaria show no signs of bringing in such tax.

The sugar tax was introduced in the UK on the 6th of April 2018 in a bid to cut the amount of sugar found in soft drinks and tackle the obesity crisis. Soft drink manufacturers who avoid reformulating their product pay a levy based on the amount of sugar present in the drink.
