Abstract
New research reveals that Britons look in the fridge or food cupboards an average of 23 times per day - despite only eating or drinking from them just six times.

According to a survey carried out by household appliances retailer AppliancesDirect.co.uk, British homeowners look in the fridge on average 14 times per day and the cupboards nine times – with women more likely to do so than men.

Whilst 22% of correspondents claimed to so because they are hungry, 35% said they looked of habit without any intention of eating something.

Mark Kelly, marketing manager at AppliancesDirect.co.uk said: “The data revealed some interesting findings about the nation’s snacking practices, especially the number of times people look in the fridge and cupboards just out of habit.

“Everyone has that one family member or friend who looks in the fridge or cupboard for a snack whenever they visit, and we’re all guilty of doing it at other people’s homes, but it’s not that often we actually take something out and eat it.”

The data also revealed the nation’s favourite go-to snacks – cheese coming in first place with 35% of correspondents regularly snacking on it, followed by 33% who chose cold meats, and 29% who eat chocolate. Fruit and vegetables came in fourth and fifth places respectively, with 27% and 22% of votes.

Kelly concluded: “It’s interesting to see that when we do snack, it seems to be the savory options that are the nations firm fridge raiding favorites.”
