Abstract
The British Turkey Federation has announced its 19th annual awards is now open for entries with catering suppliers being urged to showcase the very best of the British turkey industry in pubs, restaurants and local authority establishments.

The awards provide catering companies with a platform to demonstrate the excellent range of products available to foodservice customers as they look to fill the demand for a tasty, nutritious and versatile protein throughout the year.

Catriona Lee, chair of the British Turkey Federation’s publicity and marketing committee, said: “Foodservice is a key sector for the industry with a great scope for new and exciting products. Buying British turkey presents caterers with so many benefits - it is a great flavour carrier and the breast meat is low in fat which has become an increasing factor for chefs, enabling for healthier options.

“The British provenance is another menu plus point and because it’s reasonably economic, greater profit margins could even come into play.”

The British Turkey Awards catering categories are divided into Cost Sector aimed at local authorities and Profit Sector for products targeted at pubs, hotels and restaurants. An indepdent panel of judges, including Craft Guild of Chefs vice chairman Lee Maycock, will taste and examine shortlisted entries against set criteria.

The Foodservice Retailer of the Year recognises the companies that commit to supporting the British turkey industry with dishes on the menus all year.  Last year, where it was won by Mitchells and Butler for including turkey on Toby Pub menus seven days a week in four different menu sections.

The annual Student Chef of the Year competition also forms part of the awards, with young catering students from colleges across the country competing to create the best turkey starter and main course, to be served at The Dorchester, during the ceremony on 24th September where winners of the 13 categories will be announced.
