Abstract
Over 8,500 people visited Bristol Museum over the weekend, after museum directors unveiled an exhibition by elusive artist Banksy, resulting in the café team having to open a second outlet.
It seems even Banksy himself is a fan of the café. He told the Bristol Evening Post on Friday: "I could have taken the show to a lot of places, but they do a very nice cup of tea in the museum." Run by Compass Group UK & Ireland, the Museum café serves loose leaf tea in traditional china teapots. The café was so busy that the team had to set up a second, temporary café in one of the galleries. Sales of tea more than doubled a usual weekend and the homemade chocolate brownie was the most popular cake. Cariad Silk, general manager for the Bristol City Museum café, said: "It was such a thrill for the team when Banksy praised our tea, and we certainly had to work hard this weekend to live up to our reputation. Of course, it's a shame we don't know what he looks like – we might have been serving Banksy in here for years and never realised!" Through its leisure business, Milburns, Compass Group UK & Ireland has run the Edwardian-style café at the Bristol Museum for approximately four years serving hot meals, sandwiches and cakes, freshly made on the premises.
