BNF calls on school caterers to help children eat healthier snacks
Abstract
The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) has called on school caterers and retailers to help children eat healthier snacks during Snack-tember.

New research from the BNF found 79% of students aged between 10-13 years-old usually have two or more snacks on a school day. While many children and young people choose unhealthy snacks, the BNF says having healthier snacks can help maintain energy levels throughout the day and provide essential nutrients.

The survey also found more than two-thirds of students (69%) are open to learning how to choose and make healthier snacks. Over half (53%) of students report purchasing snacks from the school canteen during breaktime. Less than one in five students (19%) feel their school canteen helps them to choose healthier options.

In response to these findings, the BNF is inviting schools, retailers and caterers to participate in a month-long initiative focused on promoting healthier, more sustainable snacking options for children and young people.

Claire Theobald, education services manager at the BNF, said: “We know that unhealthy snacks can contribute to intakes of sugar, salt and saturated fat.

“But schools can play a key role in empowering young people to choose snacks that provide essential nutrients, as well as being satisfying and tasty. That’s why we want schools to join us for Snack-tember this year to get free resources and support for healthier, more sustainable snacking for their pupils.

“We’re looking to partner with UK caterers and retailers so that the information that children and young people will be receiving in school, clubs and at home during Snack-tember, is echoed in school canteens, in stores and online to help us amplify the healthier, more sustainable snacking message.”
