Abstract
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has found that improved vitamin D intake through measures such as food fortification could help prevent colds or flu.
The BMJ’s new study supports the introduction of such public health measures that could prove particularly effective in settings where vitamin D deficiency is common.
The study follows Public Health England’s recommendations in July to take vitamin D supplements during the autumn and winter months, which stated that relying on dietary sources is not enough to meet the recommended daily intake of 10 micrograms.
Vitamin D is found naturally in a small number of foods including oily fish, red meat, liver and egg yolks and in fortified food like breakfast cereals and fat spreads.
