Abstract
The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has joined forces with the British Retail Consortium, Food and Drink Federation and National Farmers Union to launch Salsa, a safe and local supplier approval scheme.
The initiative, sponsored by DEFRA and the Food Standards Agency, opens new opportunities to supply retailers, hotels, restaurants and caterers both locally and nationally.
Locally-based mentors are available to provide appropriate professional advice and assistance to small businesses on food safety and issues including equipment purchase, training and systems.
Food service company 3663 who have endorsed the scheme, said: "The scheme will help us continue to support local producers, as part of our dedicated commitment to provide our customers with local products."
The Salsa Governance Council is keen to update all stakeholders on the progress and development so far of the scheme and is holding a meeting on 17 January at Browns Restaurant in London.
The meeting will involve presentations from food retailers and food service groups who have been using the scheme such as Waitrose and Asda. Salsa trained professionals will also be discussing their mentoring and auditing of local suppliers enrolled in the scheme.
Since the launch, there have been over 480 on-line registrations, with 125 Salsa members working towards approval.
