The ‘Better with Less- Design Challenge’ opens for entries
Abstract
Metsä Board, European producer of fresh fibre paperboards, has launched the Better with Less Design Challenge to ‘inspire’ designers to create more environmentally friendly food packaging.

Submissions for the four categories (food packaging, cosmetics, e-commerce and the ‘wild card’ category) are now open until 5 January 2020. The main prize is €7,000, second prize is €2,000 and third place receives €1,000.

Ilkka Harju, packaging services director at Metsä Board (for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific), said: "We need to challenge the packaging world with new solutions – new ways of thinking and new innovations.

“This competition is all about lessening environmental impact without compromising brand experiences. We aim to help advance innovative and sustainable packaging design throughout the world."

The competition launched in 2017/18 receiving over 300 packaging designs from 38 countries. The winning design was an environmentally friendly paperboard alternative to plastic bubble wrap.

Metsä Board will give one design student the opportunity of an internship with its packaging design team in Äänekoski, Finland.

The jury consists of ‘renowned packaging design experts’ including Alissa Demorest chief editor of luxury packaging magazine Formes de Luxe, Andrew Gibbs founder, chief executive & chief editor of The Dieline and Charles Ng founder & chief brand consultant of MCL Group Hong Kong/China.

The competition can be followed on social media with the hashtag #betterwithless
