Battle of the Barista continues

17th Feb 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
Maxine Beadsmoore from the award winning Bottle Kiln Buttery Café in West Hallam, Derbyshire, is through to the semi final of the UK Barista Championships after winning the Midlands regional heat.
Speaking at the event a delighted Beadsmoore explained: "It's my fifth year of taking part and I started this year's training back in October. Every Monday while the café is closed has been dedicated to training for the championships plus two or three nights each week spent perfecting my routine. I've had terrific support from my boss, Rebecca Stone, Emma Chapman my training partner and my long suffering family who have hardly seen me for the last four months." Beadsmoore has been a barista and staff trainer for eight years and is a firm believer in attention to detail and high customer service standards. She said: "I've learnt the importance of having a pride in presentation, from our personalized coffee cups right through to the appearance of the crema keeps our customers coming back time and time again." "I have been lucky enough to travel with the UKBC to Kenya and Copenhagen to compete in barista championships. I can honestly say that the SanRemo machine has been one of the best machines I've ever used, 100% reliable and delivering consistently good espresso. It's so impressed me I want to take one back to the Buttery!" Andrew Tucker, managing director for SanRemo, the UKBC espresso machine sponsor said that Maxine impressed the judges with her creativity, professionalism and sparkling performance. During a UKBC heat, each competitor has 15 minutes to make four cappuccinos, four espressos and four of their own 'signature' drinks. As well as the flavour and texture of the drinks, the baristi are judged on presentation, professionalism, attention to detail and knowledge of their chosen coffee's provenance.
