Banger boost schools
Abstract
New Government rules mean sausages can now be served more often in both primary and secondary schools.

The move is good news for schools across the country and is welcomed by BPEX foodservice manager, Tony Goodger, who was involved in the consultation process.

The old rules only allowed sausages to be served once a fortnight but now they can be on the menu once a week in primary schools and twice a week in secondary schools.

Goodger said: “I gave evidence as part of the consultation and have had conversations with those behind the new rules to put the industry’s position forward.

“There has also been another change in that the rules now define exactly what constitutes meat and poultry which will benefit the industry.”

Ministers made the announcement for food in state schools, which will apply from January 2015.

Goodger added: “Sausages are hugely popular with children but getting the balance right between quality and cost right is key. It is important for school caterers provide both pupils and parents alike with confidence in the food being served; this is where Quality Assured sausages, including those produced to Red Tractor standards, have an important role to play.

“The Red Tractor logo is an easily recognisable badge which provides a guarantee of UK production standards and confirmation that the sausages have been produced to the UK’s high standards of pig welfare. School caterers should ask their butchers and suppliers about the origin of pork and pork products they are buying, to ensure they come from assured supply chains.”
