Abstract
Prue Leith CBE, the new judge on Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off, has praised the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the quality of its food in ‘Taking the Pulse’, a report on food standards in London hospitals, by The Campaign for Better Hospital Food.

Leith, food writer and formerly chair of the School Food Trust, praised the freshness, range and quality of the meals and snacks the trust provides for patients, staff and visitors in the forward to the report.

Leith said: “These hospitals meet all the basic food standards and also do better on targets like the NHS England CQUIN.

“They freshly prepare some or all of their food on site, and provide evidence for the food quality awards such as the Soil Association Food For Life catering mark or the Compassion in World Farming higher welfare meat and dairy awards.”

Leith also gave congratulations to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, and St Thomas’ Hospital.

In the report, carried out last autumn in London, The Hillingdon NHS Foundation Trust met all five hospital food standards, covering nutrition quality and sustainability, and met two out of three standards for all food in the areas of healthiness, welfare and freshness.

Out of the hospitals surveyed 50% met all five hospital food standards required in the NHS Standard Contract for hospitals and 30% of hospitals surveyed cooked fresh food for adult patients.

The survey, which covered 30 of 39 acute hospitals, providing secondary care, in London, can be downloaded here.
