Abstract
On average, Britons consume 1,460 cups of coffee a year and 93,440 over an adult lifetime, according to new research.

The survey of 2,000 people by Syrup makers MONIN put the average yearly spend per head on coffee in shops and cafes at £675 a year.

According to the poll, Britons now drink an average of four ‘cuppas’ a day – with the latte the most popular coffee of choice, receiving 41% of the vote.

Cappuccino came second with 38% followed by Americano (26%) and Mocha (16%).

Cardiff was found to be the most popular location for coffee drinkers, with the average consumption among locals rising to 1,825 cups.

61% of respondents said they preferred to drink coffee than tea, with 65% saying it was because they preferred the taste and 46% because they needed the caffeine.

Recent research from consultancy group, Allegra, showed the number of coffee shops in the UK as 22,845, a 6% increase year on year – with 2.3 billion coffees a year being bought and consumed out of home.

Lee Hyde, beverage Innovation manager at MONIN, said: “We are seeing a rise in coffee shops and coffee culture across the country, and this trend is being replicated in the home too.

"Over a third of Brits confirmed they know more about coffee than they did five years ago and coffee drinkers are finding new ways to personalise their drinks, reaching for flavours from popular vanilla to more adventurous flavours like salted caramel.

“With coffee, the menu options are endless and with seasonal flavours on the rise and iced coffees during summer, coffees aren’t only functional they’re also the perfect fit for socialising too.”
