Abstract
The Craft Guild of Chefs and the NZ-UK Link Foundation are once again seeking entries for the eagerly-awaited UK-NZ Culinary Challenge, which sees the winner embark on an all-expenses paid tour of New Zealand.
Taking place at Westminster Kingsway College on Monday 15 November 2010, the UK-NZ Culinary Challenge is open to young UK chefs who are keen to show off their culinary talents by designing a three-course gourmet menu. Eight finalists will then go into a cook-off, which will take place on Monday and be judged by a panel of judges including the founder of the competition Peter Gordon, Chef/Proprietor, Providores and Tapa Restaurant. The winner will later be announced that evening at an official awards ceremony, hosted by the NZ High Commissioner in the Penthouse Suite of New Zealand House, London. Last year's winner, Luke Fouracre, demi chef de partie at House of Commons, won the culinary challenge with a three-course menu consisting of seared scallops, salt cod brandade and chorizo foam to start, followed by loin of New Zealand venison, herb mousse with beetroot puree, venison hot pot, glazed young vegetables with a shallot and port jus; and for dessert a pear, honey and almond tart, rhubarb ice-cream. Fouracre said: "Over the four weeks, I got an amazing taste of the country. Travelling to five key regions, it opened my eyes to a new world of food, flavours and people and made me realise that there are millions of combinations of textures, flavours, colours and presentation styles. I got to meet some incredible people, do some incredible things and most of all I got to eat, taste and smell the food of New Zealand. I even got to try real Hokey Pokey ice-cream!" How to enter: Entries for the competition can be made by nominating and entering a candidate(s) or by entering directly. Entries for the competition need to be submitted by 1 October 2010. Chefs entering the competition must be aged between 18 and 23 years old as of 1st December 2010, in training or employment and hold a British passport.
