The new café will overlook the 1st tee and is expected to be open in time for the Open Championship in 2015. The contract is initially for three years, with the option of a two year extension and is expected to turnover £450k upwards annually.
The café will have 78 indoor covers and a further 60 outside on an adjoining terrace that overlooks the Bandstand, and offers views of the ocean. Its menu will celebrate Scottish cuisine produced by local suppliers, and will comprise counter service for barista coffee, cakes and snacks; with hot meals served at table.
Ampersand managing director Paul Jackson, said: “We are honoured to serve such a prestigious and exciting venue during a very important year for all involved. Additionally this adds to our growing reputation in the museum world: The Palace of Holyroodhouse; Compton Verney Art Gallery; and the Museum of London Docklands are just three other examples of our success. This appointment once again demonstrates our growing strength outside the South East.”
Angela Howe, director of the British Golf Museum, said: “The café extension and redesign of the museum entrance, reception and shop is a new chapter in the museum’s history. It is the most significant development to take place since the museum opened in 1990. Ampersand’s track record with museums and its commitment to source produce locally were important in influencing our decision”.
Ampersand is owned by CH&Co, the independent catering group, and employs almost 3,000 people nationwide. Ampersand’s extension outside of the South East includes the retention of contracts at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard and new contracts at Birmingham Botanical Gardens as well as Compton Verney art gallery in Warwickshire.
