4th Mar 2010 - 00:00
Abstract
Harlesden Primary School in North London has chosen independent catering firm Accent Catering to provide lunches for around 150 pupils each day in a 12-month rolling contract.
The move to appoint Accent is designed to ensure that all pupils, aged between three and 11 years, will have to opportunity to benefit from healthy, tasty, well prepared meals each day at an affordable price. In order to encourage a good uptake Accent Catering will be actively promoting the school meals through the parents' newsletters, offering taster sessions for both parents and children and by introducing the Chef team to all the children so they are keen to try the lunches in the new term. In addition Accent will be running a number of themed days, such as a Sports Relief day on the 19th March, which features a 'sportsman's menu' including high protein pasta, healthy jacket potatoes and homemade dessert. As part of the contract Accent Catering has appointed a new chef manager, with strong management skills, to lead the team and drive through the necessary changes including the introduction of a comprehensive training programme. He is a trained chef with considerable experience in preparing healthy, nutritious menus. Commenting on the contract Gordon Haggarty, managing director at Accent Catering, said: "The clear message to parents is that that the portions and variety of food on offer will mean that their child will eat well at lunchtime and the meal they have is sure to be tasty and filling." Headteacher, Linda Perrier at Harlesden, added: "Accent Catering impressed us with the knowledge and expertise they demonstrated in how to provide nutritional meals for 150 children at a price that is affordable to parents. We will be working closely with them to drive meal uptake which will enable us to further reduce the price of each meal."
