Since April 2021 the Labour MP for Washington and Sunderland West has been Parliamentary Private Secretary to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and is the longstanding chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on School Food, having joined it in 2015.
When then Labour Party recently announced manifesto plans to provide breakfast clubs to all primary age children she said: “We know that school food is a key plank of education and I welcome a first step towards the recognition of this [part of] … Labour’s childcare offer.”
In October she chaired an emergency inquiry session of the Food and Drink Supply Chain All-Party Parliamentary Group, saying: “Given how vital this sector is to the UK economy, from public sector catering to hospitality venues, it is vital that the Government listens to the evidence brought forward in this session.”
