YCYW 2008 winners revealed

Alejandro Jose Cancino from Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons and William Bonfield from The Box Tree Restaurant are this year's winners of the Young Chef Young Waiter competition (YCYW).
The national final of the competition, which took place at Westminster Kingsway College in London last night (30 September), saw eight chefs and eight waiters, all under 25 years old, battle it out for the coveted titles. Judging for the chefs, Bruce Poole of Chez Bruce commented on the contest: "It was very close this year, closer than ever before. It was a tough judging process, the standard was exceptional. All the competitors responded well to this year's new challenges, but all of the judges were very impressed with Alejandro's winning menu." Judge for the waiters, Stephen Mannock of Darlington College, explained: "We changed the format slightly this year, taking the pressure off in some areas so that the competitors personalities and natural waiting potential would shine through. "Williams's transformation was incredible, we gave him some constructive criticism last year, and to his credit, he has really taken it on board and completely re-invented himself. He has worked very hard and deserved to win." The lucky winners were awarded with an invitation to visit Champagne Besserat de Bellafon in Epernay, a cheque for £2000, plus a gastronomic stay in London, including a visit to the Restaurant Show, dinner at Chez Bruce and lunch in the Krug Room at The Dorchester. A range of award-winning knives from Gustav Emil Ern, courtesy of Gilberts Food Equipment for the chef and a selection of fine wines for the waiter, were also part of the first prize. Both of the first place establishments will receive a Pronto 4 Counter-Top Ice Cream Maker from Carpigiani. Taking second place was Rose Green of The Balmoral Hotel for the chefs and Katie Watson of Gleneagles Hotel for the waiters, and following closely behind in third place was Tristan Farmer of Gordon Ramsay at Claridges for the chefs, and Thomas Mercier of The Vineyard at Stockcross for the waiters.
