Workplace caterer BM achieves Planet Mark accreditation
Abstract
For the fourth year in a row BM headquarters has been accredited by Planet Mark for its carbon reduction efforts.

Certified by Planet Mark and based on the emissions at its headquarters as well as support team travel and paper usage, BM achieved a 47.5% carbon reduction based on turnover. The business achieved an 8.1% carbon reduction in 2022 compared to the previous year, with a total carbon footprint of 87.1 tCO₂e.

Planet Mark is a sustainability certification that measures and verifies companies’ carbon data and supports members to reduce their carbon emissions. BM’s recent sustainable initiatives have focused on sourcing local, high welfare and seasonal produce as well as cutting down single-use packaging.

Around 99% of BM’s emissions were Scope 3 from business travel, in which the company achieved its biggest year-on-year reduction, by one tCO2e. BM intends to continue reducing this further this year as a key focus area.

Sally Grimes, BM’s quality standards manager, said: “It’s not always easy to keep reducing carbon emissions year-on-year, particularly compared to 2021 when our offices were closed for long periods, so we’re thrilled to not only have reduced our emissions last year but exceeded our annual reduction target.”

Compared to Planet Mark’s other certified organisations, BM was in the top 10% for carbon reduction. As part of its commitment to the UN-backed ‘Race to Zero’, BM is targeting a 5% reduction in its carbon footprint for this year.

Joint managing director of BM Antony Prentice added: “Being a member of Planet Mark and supporting us to measure carbon footprints has made us all the more aware of the wider, deeper picture of just how much we need to keep challenging every decision that has a carbon impact."
