Welsh College removes foie gras

4th Dec 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
A college in Wales has removed foie gras from its menu after concerns were raised by members of the public.
Yale College in Wrexham, which has around 3,200 full-time students, said in a statement: "Yale College is renowned for training its Hospitality and Catering Students to the high standards required by the industry and offers them a fantastic fine dining restaurant in which to achieve their qualifications and skills. "The Management Team and staff of the College have taken the public's concern on board and have withdrawn foie gras from the menu offered at its Rendezvous Restaurant." Over the last couple of years, the controversy surrounding foie gras has been well documented. The RSPCA are particularly against it saying on its website: "Foie gras production involves force-feeding ducks and geese until their liver expands to an abnormally large size, sometimes 10 times that of a normally-fed bird. RSPCA opposes the production of foie gras and asks consumers to refrain from purchasing foie gras in order to decrease demand for its production." It is illegal to make foie gras in the UK but not to sell or eat it.
