Students cook up a storm at new education centre

12th Feb 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Hospitality students at Lewisham College cooked up a feast for the Mayor of London last week at the opening of the Stephen Lawrence Centre in Deptford.
Forty students on the Professional Cookery and Paramount Apprenticeship courses prepared a buffet for 250 people that included Mayor Ken Livingstone and Stephen's mother, and director of the Stephen Lawrence Trust, Doreen Lawrence OBE. Mrs Lawrence thanked the students stating "the food was fantastic and the students were charming and well presented." Kebin Cleaver, head of hospitality at Lewishan College, commented: "This was a great opportunity for the students to get real workplace experience. They represented the College in an outstanding way and many of the guests commented on their professionalism." The new centre will house mentoring rooms, flexible education studios, computer learning resources and meeting spaces. It will also offer business development suites for young entrepreneurs, as well as a creative arts laboratory with multimedia, design and digital studio facilities.
