Abstract
School catering specialist Scolarest has been chosen to provide catering services at nine secondary schools in Cornwall.
The three-year contract, which started this term, is worth £2.6 million in total turnover. Between them, the nine schools have nearly 8,000 students.
The deal has seen the introduction by Scolarest of healthy new menus focusing on home-cooked dishes, vegetables, fruit and salad and which are fully compliant with the Government's standards for school meals.
As well as nutritionally balanced main course dishes such as fruity Caribbean curry, poached salmon wraps and vegetarian chilli, students can choose from pasta dishes, filled sandwiches, baguettes and paninis or select from salad bars.
Healthy pudding choices include pots of chopped fresh fruit.
The company has also introduced its healthy snack range which has been devised by Scolarest's chefs and nutrition team to meet the new standards for school food other than lunch.
Typical choices include filled bagels, and muffins, korma and tikka curry bread parcels and home-made nachos and tortilla chips, as well as teacakes and fruit loaf.
The schools are:
Brannel School, St Austell
Hayle Community School, Hayle
Humphry Davy School, Penzance
Looe Community School, Looe
Penrice Community College, St Austell
Roseland Community School near Truro
St Ives School, St Ives
Treviglas Community College, Newquay
Wadebridge School, Wadebridge.
Scolarest is operating lunchtime and break time catering services at all nine schools. The company is also providing a breakfast service at a number of the schools.
All stakeholders including governors, teachers, parents and student representatives were involved in the decision to select Scolarest to become the schools' new catering provider. Tony Byrne, business director for Education at Compass Group, Scolarest's parent company: "Encouraging students to eat well is very important to us. We've had a very positive response to the new menus and our catering teams will be continuing to work closely with the schools to make sure that we provide healthy options that students enjoy."
