Kellogg's set to reward UK's brightest stars in breakfast

19th Dec 2007 - 00:00
Abstract
The UK's brightest stars in breakfast are to be revealed next month (31 January) at this year's Kellogg's Breakfast Clubs Plus Awards.
The awards aim to celebrate those breakfast clubs that successfully demonstrate excellence in nutrition, achieve sustainability, improve emotional health and well-being, add-value activities, and those who are involved in the community. Winners in each of these categories will receive £1,500; five runners up will win £650 and five highly recommended entrants will win membership to ContinYou's Schools Extending to Communities network and magazine subscription (Schools ETC). One in six children continues to skip breakfast. Research also shows that UK kids are spending around £413 million in the morning on term-time treats. Figures also shows that those who skip breakfast regularly are more likely to snack on higher calorific foods, and more likely to be obese, than those who have breakfast every morning. Bruce Learner, community and social responsibility manager at Kellogg's, said: "We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day but some families are pushed for time in the mornings. This is where breakfast clubs can help. Often run by volunteers or teachers working outside of contracted hours, they provide a safe, fun environment where kids can get the best start of the day." Kellogg's is working in partnership with natural community learning charity Contin You. Weblink: www.breakfastclubplus.org.uk/
