Healthier choices for Welsh schools

1st Aug 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Four Local Authorities – Wrexham, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil and Torfaen – are preparing to take part in the two year Appetite for Life Action Research Project to serve up healthier options in Welsh schools.
A total of £6.6 million has been made available over the two years to support the project. The scheme, which will be overseen by the Centre for Action Research in professional Practice at the University of Bath, will develop and test the guidelines for implementing the new food and nutritional standards outlined in the Government's plan. Those Local Authorities not involved in the initiative will be able to apply for a grant scheme to pledge their support towards the new standards in the campaign. Jane Hutt, Education Minister, commented on the reasons behind introducing this action plan: "We want to see healthier options becoming an appealing and regular choice for children and young people across Wales. The Action research Project which gets underway in September will enable us to test these new standards and share best practice to give children the very best start in life."
