Concerns over fat levels in 'free-from' foods

2nd Apr 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
Over 80% of consumers said that 'free-from' foods had too much salt and too much sugar, according to a recent survey in Foods Matter, the food allergy and intolerance magazine.
More than 75% were concerned about the levels of fat, especially hydrogenated fats in free-from foods. And 98% of respondents would like to see 'dairy-free'/'wheat free' flashes on front packages. Further findings revealed that 75% would like to be able to buy all their free-from food in a supermarket and 85% of those would like to be able to find their free-from food in a dedicated free-from section. Meanwhile over 80% of people rated taste as being the most important consideration when buying free-from food. This figure was closely followed by reliability. The survey was conducted as part of the build up to the first ever free-from' food awards, to be presented at Antony Worrall Thompson's Notting Grill on 21 May to coincide with Allergy Week.
